Scientific Conference „ARSFID - The Identity of Female Artists in Serbian Modern Art”
ORGANIZER: Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad
PARTNERS: Faculty of Music Belgrade, Institute for Literature and Art Belgrade
LOCATION: Novi Sad
DATE: November 16th-17th, 2024
The scientific conference “ARSFID – The Identity of Female Artists in Serbian Modern Art” is dedicated to Serbian female artists of the 20th and 21st centuries with the aim of increasing the visibility of the work of authors whose contributions have been historically suppressed or marginalized in the Serbian art scene. The ARSFID conference equally supports research in the history of music and visual arts, theatre, literature, as well as studies dedicated to contemporary female artists who are insufficiently recognized in traditional media spaces. Due to decades of prevailing cultural and media policies, their work often fails to reach a broader artistic audience and critics. Current research has shown that the number of female academics in Serbian society is on the rise, but this is inadequately reflected in the overall artistic “scene.” At the same time, there is a significant need to revise educational content where works by female artists either do not exist or appear sporadically. Similar data have been obtained in almost all areas of artistic activity where the works of female artists are in the minority, such as gallery collections, theatrical performances, literary awards, musical repertoires, and even encyclopedic publications about artists in Serbia that aim to create the official history of this country’s art. All these insights are a clear indicator that a change in cultural policy should be a priority for cultural and educational institutions, in line with European standards against stereotypes, gender norms, and prejudices. For this reason, the concept of identity has emerged as a primary theme in the discussion of ideas about Serbian modern and contemporary female artists. The concept of identity has marked the discourse of the 20th and 21st centuries in the field of social sciences and humanities and has established itself as a useful but complex concept. With its multiplicity, as indicated, for example, by the definition of French psychologist Edmond-Marc Lipiansky, identity “oscillates between similarity and difference, between what makes us individual, and which at the same time makes us similar to others,” and it continues to enable various scientific and research approaches. The ARSFID scientific conference is part of the project “History and identity of female artists in Serbian modern art – creating a source for scientific and artistic transposition,” supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the Identities program, and it is open to topics from all artistic fields.
